Message:

Space for God!

I don’t have a mini sermon today. Just a little food for thought. I wish I had more time to spend on these messages, but maybe later.

We claim that our lives are so busy. We literally fill our days with an ungodly list of things. Hang in here with me. I think you’ll see my point. Of course, there’s work, travel time, cooking for some and drive-throughs for others. We have church activities and worship service. We have our favorite programs we watch. We have date nights and time with the kids. We have grocery shopping, bedtime, gossip time, social media time and more. I think you get my point. We fill up every single moment of the day and somehow we struggle to find time for God. Though some of it is about God and serving God, but the truth of the matter is that most of it usually happens without a real thought about God or a even a sincere word with God.

Every day God grants us 24 hours. Regardless of how much of the sun appears that day, we still receive the same 24 hours. That 24 hours doesn’t change unless God takes us home. I see having space in your life for God the same way as I see tithing. All of our time is a gift and all of our time really belongs to God.  What if we tithed our time just like we are asked to tithe our money?

Though church activities are in God’s house with God’s people and worship service is intended to be space for God, how much of that time is really about God? Has worship service become more an order of worship, a tradition or carefully thought out procedures? Have we created routines that have little to do with God and more of a production? What are the thoughts that cross our minds during worship? Are some of us sleepy? Are we thinking about what we’ll have for lunch/dinner after service? Did we just get a text from someone we know? Are we distracted by the inappropriate outfits we see? What about the cute hairstyles and makeup? Are we focused on the activity of the choir, whose solo was good, whose tone isn’t quite right and whose wearing the wrong color, rather than joining in and singing a joyful noise unto the Lord? How sacred is worship really? Has church become another means of social media rather than space to worship God?

We ALL have to be more careful! Truthfully, since our lives are so inundated with distractions it is difficult at best to focus on God. ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) should be GDD (God Deficit Disorder).

Are we still in the wilderness because we can’t keep our eyes and ears on God? Are we really dedicating our lives to serving and honoring God or are we dedicating our lives to the appearance that we are serving and honoring God?

Imagine what life would be like if we felt the need to speak to God as much as we open Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. What if God received that much attention from us? What if we were so fascinated with what’s going on with God that it was hard to put down our bibles.  What if we were more concerned about God’s business then we are about other peoples business? What if God was the fascination that caught our attention rather than what’s going on in the White House?

We all have our addictions. Some folks have drugs. Some folks have TV. Some folks have gambling. Some folks have the opposite sex or the same sex. Some have work. Other folks have social media. And only a small few folks have God.

For some reason even though we claim that we are Christian, finding the space to be present with God is the most difficult thing in the world for us. An addiction to God would be a good thing, but God seems to have so much competition. We’ve been brainwashed to focus on everything but God…
