Today’s focus:
Developing a closer relationship with God
Developing space/time for God
Message:
Jealousy Gets God Everywhere
Amazingly enough, developing a closer relationship with God and finding time to be with God are two high priorities for the people I encounter. That’s always a good thing. I believe they are both connected and neither can exist without the other.
It seems to me that we often know how to get closer to “people” but we struggle with getting knowing how to get closer to God. We’ll work on that over time.
Our God is a jealous God! There are numerous places in scripture that support this idea. Here are a couple that come to mind:
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Exodus 20:5
(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),
Exodus 34:14
You don’t have to look far to find others.
Deuteronomy 4:24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 5:9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
Deuteronomy 6:15 for the Lord your God in your midst is a jealous God—lest the anger of the Lord your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth.
Deuteronomy 32:16 They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger.
Deuteronomy 32:21 They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.
Joshua 24:19 But Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.
1 Kings 19:10 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”
1 Kings 19:14 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”
I could go on, but I think by now you get the point. Whatever we think about, serve more, love more, follow more, cherish more and connect with more we make way for God to be jealous and angered. I can’t imagine why (sarcasm), since He created us in His own image and yet we spend all of our waking hours on everything and everyone else but God.
On a human level, we get our feeling hurt when we give birth to children that don’t respect us, honor us, obey us, love us, and appreciate us after the sacrifices we make on their behalf. We wonder where we went wrong when a child, no matter the age, doesn’t have time for us. Yet, we struggle giving God what He so divinely deserves. Jealousy Gets God Everywhere.
We are never too grown to praise and worship God. What are some of the things you can do to develop a closer relationship with God?
